MSSC Tag Team Endurance Rumble: Mud Warfare!

Slimy clay, gooey mud and a whole line-up of throttle-happy dirtbikers. We got boot-deep into the brown stuff to bring you scenes from a whole new enduro location at Lima Kedai, Johor, on 25 Nov 2018!

A dry start on the MX track – that is, until you hit the trails proper!

“Try not to fall and keep going for as many laps as possible.” This race strategy might sound like a no-brainer, but ultra slick trail conditions made it no mean feat. Ships Lim and Kamil made consistency the name of their game, and were rewarded with the top placing in the Silver Class. Between them, they clocked over 20 laps in the 3 hour race.

Malaysians known as the “SDU riders” showed up in full force to deliver serious competition!

Alan Ng and his team mate claimed the championship medals for the Gold Class.

With mild gradients and few technical obstacles along all three race loops, the main challenge for riders was simply staying upright in slippery terrain.

Making it look like child’s play: mother-son tag team Marian and Luke displayed impressive race composure and dogged tenacity in the Silver Class.

Who rides a 3 hour tag team race on his own, in demanding conditions, and still beats the crap out of most of the Gold Class competition? Richard ‘Red Rider’ Lim (left) does. His gameplan was to gun hard from the start and then try to maintain a lead with pure mental grit. He only took a 20-minute break 2 hours into the race when cramps set in. Tyre selection was key, Richard explained. In anticipation of a major mud rumble, he chose to roll out his beefier KTM 250 EXC-F that was outfitted with MX knobbies, over a lightweight KTM 300 with enduro tyres. His palms were riddled with blisters to show for it.

This guy also knows a thing or two about endurance. Like Richard, George rode his Silver class race without a team mate and still snagged a podium finish. No more novice category for you the next time, George!

Isaac’s popped his race cherry, barely a few months after picking up the sport. With a 38T rear sprocket and single-digit, tubliss-aided tyre pressures, he turned his KTM 300 into a formidable tractor that ploughed through 3 consecutive laps of the Silver Class route without a single spill.

It’s been years since Juvena The Wandering Wasp (left) and I last pinned race tags to our dirtbikes. This tag team enduro delivered just the right equation of thrills, spills and doable fun for us to haul our rusty asses back into the action, right alongside the newbies.
We’ve got Ken Lim and his team from the Motorcycle Safety and Sports Club (MSSC) to thank for the weekend’s fun. They’ve pulled off an event for all levels of riding skill, and it’s one that the veteran, novice and returning riders will be talking about for quite awhile. Bring on the next one already!
